RED ALERT – Draft Model Tenancy Act, 2015 – Landlords to demand ANY AMOUNT as rent.

The Union Government’s Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation has published the Draft Model Tenancy Act, 2015. The Draft Act may be downloaded here.

The said Act, if introduced by the Maharashtra Government, will repeal the Maharashtra Rent Control Act altogether.

The Act will allow landlords to demand any amount as rent from tenants. If a tenant does not agree to pay the said amount, the landlord will have the right to evict the tenant.

The net effect of this is that crores of people in Mumbai, Maharashtra and across India will be dis-housed, evicted and ruined.

This Draft Model Tenancy Act is far worse and far more unjust to tenants than the proposed amendment to the Maharashtra Rent Control Act which the State Government recently scrapped.

  1. The statement made in this article is all falsehood and a lie – as under the Model Tenancy Act the rents would be fixed and notified by the state government and not as per the discretion of the landlords. I, would therefore request the author of this article not to create unnecessary confusion and misunderstanding among people. This Act will help curb the landlords who are charging higher rents for the premises offered today as the rents notified by the state governments would certainly be less. Hence it would benefit all the new tenants as their rents would be lowered than what they are paying today.
